What is the best way to keep weeds under control?

We didn't have much luck with weed guard, the weeds just grew on the TOP of the weed guard!  DH gets very frustrated so he took up all the mulch and the weed guard and we tried it just dirt for a while but our plants our to sparce and it looked terrible (but didn't have weeds), now we have pine needles, they don't look bad but the weeds grow quick.  He has a handy dandy weed tool he loves to use and was great when it was just the dirt, isn't so bad with the pine needles.  Just wondering if you all know of any "magic secrets".   Someone told DH to use weed guard and then to put in lots and lots of thick deep mulch.

  • We use a lot of mulch and I weed at least weekly.

This and don't let the weeds go to seed. As soon as you see a weed, pull it out. I walk my flower beds daily. If I see a weed, I just yank it.

  • We had horrible dandelions this year and used Weed B-Gone and it worked beautifully.  We used the one that says for use on lawns because it not supposed to kill the grass.  I highly recommend it.
  • Casoron is the best, i swear by it. I seriously weed maybe twice a year.

Can this be used on weeds in the grass? or does it kill the grass also?

There is no magic secret. Like others said, mulch and pull. For weeds that can't be pulled up, spray the hell out of them.

Gardens require maintenance. Just like teeth. If you don't keep them clean, stuff grows in hard to reach places.

This, but I also put down Preen in the spring and that seems to help keep the weeds under control.

  • We used corn gluten for the first time this year. I am told that timing is pretty crucial though and if you put it down in the spring at the point of germination, then it works great, but I think you really only have a two week span. Good luck!
